Career Development
HURRY!! Last Chance for 2010 Classes Ends Soon!
Medical coding and billing are two of the most economically secure careers in the job market today. Successful providers are supported by skilled coders and billers. Although these two careers are independent in their required knowledge and job responsibilities, they work hand-in-hand to obtain the reimbursement of a healthcare provider’s services. The most valuable type of employee is familiar with both of these areas of expertise. Let’s evaluate both career choices:
- Assigns procedures and diagnosis codes to the services performed by physicians and other healthcare professionals.
- Must have a comprehensive knowledge of medical record documentation, medical terminology, anatomy, diseases and medical procedures.
- Requires certification credentials to ensure a level of knowledge that is necessary to perform the work accurately and according to Federal Law.
- Coders can quickly progress into auditors, compliance officers, office managers, consultants and teachers.
- Pre-requisite courses in medical terminology and anatomy precede beginning and advanced level of coding courses.
- Utilizes software to input claim data, which includes patient demographics, insurance coverage, and CPT, ICD-9 and HCPCS codes.
- Must have a comprehensive knowledge of Medicare, Medicaid and commercial insurance payer guidelines.
- Benefits from an understanding of the physician practice and the multiple facets of the billing cycle which precede and impact claims submission and payment.
- Must submit appeals for reconsideration to insurance payers for payment of denied codes, thereby requiring an intermediate level of coding knowledge.
- Pre-requisite courses in medical terminology and beginning coding will precede a course in billing and reimbursement.
